History of Cantonment
The name of Cantonment is directly because of the militarized history of the area. During 1814, the area was full of different groups, such as the Native Americans, who were trying to fight for the rights given to them in the area. During this commotion, multiple settlers were killed during the incident, which prompted the response of government.
Under President Monroe’s orders, militia centered around Gen. Andrew Jackson came into action. According to legends, this also became the start of the connection between him and a certain Don Manuel Gonzales. Due to the concern within the area, the military went back and forth until Don Gonzales set up a military encampment, which is also called a “cantonment” on his property. As time passed, Cantonment got stuck and became the name of the area.
Perdido River
The Perdido River runs through the left part of Cantonment, dividing Alabama and Florida. Before industrialization, the area was home to longleaf pines, making it one of the most ecologically diverse areas in North America. Due to human industries, much of forestry is cleared for the creation of arable land or timber production.
Due to this growing nature concern, parts of the area have been converted into a nature preserve called the Perdido River Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Under Florida Law, the area has been under wildlife protection in order to protect it from further timber farming. For the past few years, it has also been open for public recreation, and residents are now able to do different activities, such as hiking and canoeing, within the area.
Due to the laid-back atmosphere of the area, it is possible to spend time just relaxing within the different parks and nature reserves that are close to Cantonment.
